The first time I heard “Whiskey Glasses” written by Ben Burgess and Kevin Kadish and performed by Morgan Wallen, I just came out of a ten year relationship with the father of my children, and this song spoke to me, especially since I am a huge karaoke fan “don’t want to hit the karaoke bar, can’t sing without her” (on in my case “can’t sing without him.”)
Ironically, this is one of the first songs that inspired me to take the guitar and singing abilities that I have been hiding and ignoring for so long, and put them to use! I was so inspired to play and sing “Whiskey Glasses” and this was the start of playing open mic country music jams in my area, which I have been doing for about three months now.
I love the lyrics to this song. I especially love the use of double meanings “pour me, pour me another drink” or “poor me, pour me another drink.” Also love the “last call, I swear this will be my last call, cuz I ain’t drunk dialing no more at 3 am, Mr. Bartender hit me again.”
I also love how this song starts out with some very light guitar in the background. As Morgan progresses through the first verse, the guitar gets just a bit more powerful as the lines go on, which helps build the pain behind the song.
Although I don’t drink, nor do I condone the use of alcohol after a break up to mask pain, I can completely relate to the feeling of not wanting to feel anything, and just wanting to be in a daze because it is too painful. I also resepect the role of whiskey in the theme of country music and like how the writers pull that to the surface here!
This is definitely a song anyone with a broken heart can relate to “If I’m gonna be single I’m gonna need a double shot of that heartbreak proof!”
