Love “Any Ol’ Barstool” written by Josh Thompson and Derric Ruttan, and performed by Jason Aldean. The guitar pulls me in right from the beginning. Love the connotation and meaning of “pedal to the metal on a downhill slide.” I know just what that downhill slide feels like when you can’t have the one you love; doing anything to forget, and not really doing so well.
You can tell how hurt the writer is, but he tries to mask his pain. Jason does a great job of bringing this story to life through the emotion in his voice. I am having fun, partying, drinking, smoking, going from bar to bar, and not thinking about you!!! “I ain’t wondering where you been or who you been with. I guess you didn’t hurt me half as bad as you think you did.” Yeah, right!
Love the irony! He is hurt so he is doing everything to avoid the pain, but all he can really do is feel the pain and think about her. “I ain’t sitting around, trying to drown the thought of you. Ask any ol’ bar stool!” That’s exactly what he is doing! Trying to forget about her by bar hopping. He knows it is not a healthy way to cope but when you have a broken heart, healthy coping is one of the hardest things to do.
After coming out of a ten year relationship with the father of my children, I am working on those healthy coping mechanisms (playing my guitar, singing, journaling/writing, exercising, playing with my kids, and of course “LISTENING TO COUNTRY MUSIC”). Hopefully I am pedal to the metal on an uphill slide!
