Review of "God is Great, Beer is Good, and People are Crazy" by Billy Currington

“God is Great, Beer is Good, and People are Crazy,” written by Bobby Braddock and Troy Jones, and performed by Billy Currington, takes us through the story of two good ol’ boys who meet in a bar and swap real life stories (one is a pretty young man, and the other is much older and closer to the end of life). The story is told from the view of the young man.

As the two gentlemen bond over beer, a beverage central to the theme of country music, they talk politics, old girlfriends, war, divorce, relocation, old habits (e.g., smoking) and life and death. As they are sharing their life stories, the older man says to the younger man “God is great, beer is good, and people are crazy!” It is this line that makes the chorus of the song; and it is clear that the younger man never heard a statement he found to be more true.

At the end of the song, the young man finds out that the older man was a millionaire, who left him his fortune when he passed, essentially due to the bond they created that day in the bar. The older man’s children were angry that he did not leave the fortune to them (that is the one part of the song that makes me scratch my head). I get that they bonded in the bar, but I wonder what kind of relationship he had with his children if he left his money to a stranger. Maybe he was estranged from his kids because he drank too much beer, I don’t know, but in any case, it is a powerful story of two men that connect over beer in a bar. That may not sound like much, but when listening to this song it almost feels like you are right there with them, bonding over similar life stories that many of us can relate to. They ponder topics central to the theme of most of our lives.

“God is Great, Beer is Good, and People are Crazy,” has a catchy, happy melody. The background music is fun. This is a good song to play at a bar, or at a laid back party. Also would love to listen to this on the beach or at the pool just relaxing in a lounge chair. The lyrics of the chorus are easy to remember and fun to sing along to.
