“The Ones That Didn’t Make it Back Home” Video with Lyrics
So much feeling in my heart when I listen to “The Ones That Didn’t Make It Back Home’ performed by Justin Moore (Composed by Justin Moore, Paul DiGiovanni, Chase McGill, and Jeremy Stover). This “dose of reality” has left me crying more than once. The lyrics are perfect and capture the heartache that so many loved ones feel when their son, daughter, brother, sister, partner, etc. doesn’t return home from overseas. This song is an amazing tribute to our fallen heroes “the not forgotten gone.”
I didn’t grow up around a military family, and there wasn’t too much talk about military in my home town growing up, at least not with the families I was exposed to during childhood. However, I have a deep appreciation and admiration for the ones who put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe and stand up for our freedom! This song does such an amazing job of capturing the love we have for the veterans we have lost. “They’re in a better place up there, but they sure left a hole down here.” Carrying on without them after they were heroes for us is crushing, and it also creates a deep admiration for their bravery. Our heroes inspire us all to be better, and put others before ourselves.
The music in this song is so heart felt and a perfect match for the gut wrenching lyrics such as ” There was a knock on the door ’round two o’clock. Two uniforms and her heart stopped. Yellow ribbon ’round an oak tree, blowing in the breeze.”
I can vividly see the scene Justin describes after a mother learns of her fallen son:
The whole town shut down, the whole town showed up.
Sang Amazing Grace, watched a slideshow of His 22 years. There was laughs and there was tears.
I actually connected with an amazing woman in a karaoke bar over this song. We got to talking about country music and she brought up “The Ones That Didn’t Make it Back Home.” We couldn’t help but bond over the shared emotions this song brings up for us. We were quoting lines like ” Tour was up, middle of June. She was planning a welcome home barbecue. Green bean casserole, Grandma’s recipe.”
